WHAT TO WEAR: ZOOM EDITION

It’s no surprise that Facetime/Zoom meetings are the new normal. Whether you’re heading back to campus or you’re WFH (Working From Home), we’ve rounded up 9 fashion, beauty and technical tips to make you look and feel your best on-camera. Look good, feel good, am I right?

FASHION TIPS

  1. Opt for solid bright colors. Here’s the 4-1-1 with colors and patterns on-camera: white will wash you out, black (though slimming and chic in real life) tends to be over-powering on video, never go with a super busy pattern (overwhelming and honestly, distracting) and darker tones are dull. Your best option is to play around with solid, bright colors. Find which one best compliments your skin tone, hair color, background and go with that!

  2. Consider accessories your new BFF. Though you definitely don’t want to go too heavy on the jewelry, long earrings (specifically ones that hang just at about your jawline) will make your face look thinner because it brings your eyes downward. (Styling is all about shapes, colors and direction of the eye!) Same rule applies for long necklaces, they can make your neck look longer and slimmer as opposed to a choker or one that sits right one your collar bones. No one wants the ‘camera adds 10lbs’ thing to be true, right?

  3. Don’t forget your bottom half of your body. No seriously, if you think you’ll wear a cute top with your favorite Boys Lie sweatpants, think again, girl. Unless you know for a FACT you do not have to get up to grab something from your printer, partake in some weird new icebreaker or even tend to your child, I would highly suggest putting on something a little more formal. Plus, being fully dressed for the occasion while being at home can make you more excited and focused. (And we all need an excuse to dress up nowadays!)

BEAUTY TIPS

  1. If your face appears shiny, head for your matte foundation and finish with some translucent powder on your ‘problem’ areas. Love a dewy look, but now’s not the time!

  2. If your hair looks greasy and flat, spray your fav dry shampoo up in your roots! Use a brush to rub it in - not your fingers, fingers will add more oil back to your hair - and do a few hair flips. Wah-lah! Volume for dayssss.

  3. Have a little bit of redness on your nose, cheeks or chin? Use a concealer with green undertones to off-set the redness and finish up with a yellow-tinted loose powder. Color tricks will SAVE YOUR LIFE. (Also, concealers with pink undertones help with dark circles under your eyes from those all-nighters! You’re welcome.)

TECHNICAL TIPS

  1. Shoulders back, chin up. Posture is super important while being on a video call. Not only does sitting up straight with your shoulders back make you look more confident (and professional) but it will make you feel more confident, too!

  2. NATURAL LIGHTING. Girl, you know this, but it’s honestly so important we couldn’t leave it out. Harsh lighting can either blow you out or give you unflattering shadows under your eyes and nose. (Who wants that?) The best lighting is if you sit near your window, a few feet back. Or even outside on your back deck, somewhere well-lit but not too harsh and bright. Imagine a video call during ‘golden hour’? *star eyes* If those aren’t an option for you whether it’s your location or the time of the call, invest in a ring light! They come in all sizes and can even come with different light color settings. PERFECT for calls and for selfies.

  3. Your background is just as important as your top. It’s best to keep your background as simple as possible. No swaying trees, cluttered bedroom or grandma’s old wallpaper. Keep it clean, simple and make sure it doesn’t clash with your outfit!

While you’re on Zoom calls this semester or having a weekly team meeting, we hope this inspired you to look and feel your absolute best on-camera. Go slay that online presentation, babe!
